Saturn Design on Long Sleeve Shirt
When you see Saturn though a telescope, you know what you are looking at because only two things in the known Universe look like Saturn: Saturn, and fictional depictions of other planets animated to look like Saturn. And though even when viewed through BIG telescopes, it appears small. Know that it is NOT small. It is just far away. Saturn and its ring system have a combined diameter of 170,000 miles (270,000 km). By comparison, our Moon orbits at an average distance of 240,000 miles (385,000 km). This means even without the extreme gravitational challenges involved, it would still be difficult to parallel-park Saturn between Earth and our Moon.
Saturn's rings are 99% pure water ice and thought to have originated from a moon falling into a decaying orbit, but before plunging into the planet, it was crushed into ice cubes and ice boulders by Saturn's strong rotational forces. The smaller pieces then expanded outward, flattening out, until the rings are now as thin as 33 ft (10 m).
As "big" as Saturn is, also being 95 times Earth's mass, it has a much lower density than every other body in the Solar System. Paradoxically, this might be why Saturn has so many more moons (145) than Jupiter (95). Both have enough gravity to pull smaller worlds into orbit around them, but Jupiter's gravitational well is 2.5 times deeper than Saturn's so comets and asteroids might be more likely to plunge all the way into Jupiter before their orbits can stabilize. Regardless, the seven moons, as depicted on this wearable Telescope Astro Art are from top to bottom: Mimas, Rhea, Enceladus, Tethys, Iapetus, Dione, Titan. If you know that Mimas is the most inner moon and Iapetus is the most distant, they probably appear out of order in this design. Realize that these moons always appear randomly jumbled or scattered about when viewed through a telescope. This is because all these moons have such bigger orbits than the rings that when they are orbiting in front of or behind the planet, they will appear at entirely different and seemingly wrong elevations when compared to the rings.
