Who can't enjoy a new-to-you and especially new-to-your-friends Uranus joke? Obviously, somebody who would never wear this shirt in public. Regardless, while we say it as a joke, we also sincerely feel, "No visit to the Dark Ranger Observatory is complete until you have a good look at Uranus." Seeing Planet #7 through a BIG telescope for the first time, won't change your life in the same way that a view Saturn can for some people. Indeed, Uranus is just a pale turquoise dot. Even when imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope it’s just a much bigger pale turquoise dot. But it's also a sight few people ever have, or ever will, see with their own eye. What's more, under optimal seeing conditions, our largest telescopes can also show the faint gray speck of Titania, the foreground world in this design -- Uranus's largest moon.
Like every other planet, Uranus isn’t always in the nighttime sky when our observatory is “in show.” If you’re not comfortable calling, texting, or emailing to ask, “Are we going to see Uranus tonight?”, you can consult an astronomy app on your phone. Worst case scenario? If your timing is off, now you have a reason to visit us again.
If given the opportunity to see the real thing, take a few extra minutes to get a good look. And while waiting for your turn at the eyepiece, don’t feel like you need to suppress a chuckle. Certainly, don’t suppress the opportunity to learn some science and history about this weird world. Happily, take home that experience and the new found knowledge. No, you don't have to buy and proudly wear this design. But you'd have a better story to tell if you did. Not to mention we'd greatly appreciate the word-of-mouth advertising that there’s at least one observatory where there’s no shame in admiring Uranus.
